A fireplace is a great addition to any home and it can be used as an entertainment center for your family. There are different types of fireplaces. Some fires can be used for heating and cooking, while some only heat the air without any flames or burning embers visible to the eye. Wood-burning fireplaces create more smoke than gas-fed ones because wood does not burn as cleanly as other fuels like natural gas (NG), propane (LP), or oil. A fireplace must be built in compliance with the building codes and standards of your area before you start using it as a heating source for your home.
Useful Tips
- Use a metal fireplace screen to prevent embers from popping out onto your floor.
- Keep the fireplace area clear of flammable items such as curtains, furniture and rugs that could be ignited by flying sparks or heat.
- Let the ashes completely cool before removing them from your fireplace. This will prevent you from burning yourself when emptying the bin or bucket of ash.
- When lighting your fire, make sure you have a screen in place to keep sparks inside the fireplace.
- Never leave children unattended when they are playing near an open fireplace. Make sure that any pets or animals cannot get into trouble with your fireplace either!
- Have a working smoke alarm in areas where people will be sleeping.
- Ensure you keep your chimney free of bird nests and other debris to prevent animals from nesting in the flue or firebox. This could lead to a fire starting inside your home, which can be extremely dangerous!
- Only burn seasoned wood that has been split for an open fireplace. Dried out kindling and green wood can produce a lot of tar and smoke which will build up in the chimney.
- Keep a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace to keep sparks and hot ashes inside. This will prevent creosote from building up on your flue, especially if you have an open chimney firebox.
- Make sure your chimney has the right height to prevent smoke seeping into other rooms. The distance should be three times taller than the diameter of your flue, so if you have a four inch chimney it needs to be twelve inches high!
- If you are using wood for fuel in an open fireplace or firebox, make sure you place the logs with the bark facing up. This will allow air to circulate around them, making it burn better.
- Make sure your chimney flue is open before lighting a fire! You should be able to feel the suction when opening and closing your damper. The smoke must exit through this point in order to keep your chimney free of soot.
