There are a few common recommended methods, but the easiest is to dust the chimney with ashes in small batches. This should be done in an outdoor area and possibly with heavy gloves – ash is made up of silica and it can cause skin irritation or lung disease if inhaled too often without protection.
Some people will also use tablets for emergencies (when there’s no time to stop and wait), which do an okay job on high-gloss surfaces like metal or wood, even though they’re designed for concrete surfaces. The trick here is prevention; cleaning your chimney regularly means you won’t need these tablets at all!
