Tile is usually held in place with mortar, which can be wet or dry. Depending on what kind of tile you have, it may come away fairly easily when soaked with water for a day or two. Otherwise, chisel out the grout between tiles to loosen them and then pry up each one until they are all removed from their backer board. You will need to scrape off any residual adhesive that’s left behind after removing the tiles before installing new ones.
