A gas fireplace does not need rocks. It works with the fire burning inside the glass-fronted cabinet to produce heat and light, just like a traditional wood-burning or direct vent hearth appliance that’s used for heating homes in cold climates – it converts fuel into thermal energy within its steel chamber where flames are visible. That said, there may be nothing wrong with putting some pretty rocks on top of your gas logs! The choice is yours as long as you follow safety guidelines regarding how many should go inside at any one time (see below) so they don’t become dangerously hot.
