-Install a direct vent or sealed combustion fireplace. A direct vent or sealed combustion fireplace directs the exhaust gases into an outside chimney and then directly to the exterior of your home, which helps prevent heat from escaping through your flue. This results in better efficiency by reducing cold air drafts and improving heating performance for greater comfort inside while using less fuel than traditional nonvented fireplaces.

-Keep doors closed when you use the fireplace so that hot air does not escape up your chimney unless necessary (i.e., overnight).

-Open your fireplace damper when you are not burning a fire. The open damper allows for better air circulation, which results in more complete combustion and greater heating efficiency. Plus it helps reduce creosote buildup in the chimney flue by allowing hot exhaust gases to escape up the chimney rather than back into your home through gaps around doors or windows where they could cause discomfort (i.e., drafts). Do this only if there is good cross ventilation taking place because of an open door or window nearby; otherwise, keep them closed while using the fireplace for maximum heat retention inside your home.
