Pros: Square fire pits allow for a larger area to be heated. They tend to burn longer and more consistently than round ones, as the wood is able to smolder better. The walls of these types of outdoor fireplaces can also support cooking equipment or other items that may need warmth in addition to using it as a source of heat, which round pits cannot do. Square fire pits also come in various designs and sizes, making it possible to use them as centerpieces or focal points of an outdoor space.

Cons: Square fire pit plans tend not to be quite as popular nor widely available when compared with those for rounded ones, which can make it harder to find plans to build them. Square fire pits also tend to be more expensive than round ones due in part because of the materials used but perhaps even more so because there are fewer companies selling these types of outdoor fireplaces, making it harder for customers to get access to good prices on wood-burning units.
