Moving a fireplace is not as easy as it sounds. It’s more than just picking up the hearth and carrying it across the room. You’ll need to know some tips and tricks to ensure that you don’t damage your home while moving the fireplace out of its old spot and into its new one.

How to move a fireplace:

*Choose the right tools – You’ll need more than just some strong arms and backs. Moving a hearth that weighs several hundred pounds requires some power equipment, such as hydraulic jacks or winches. A dolly with wide-set wheels is also helpful when moving large pieces of furniture.

*Never carry anything by hand – If you don’t have the proper equipment on hand, never try carrying something heavy from one place in your home to another by yourself. Carrying items across thresholds can damage them and leave dents in doorways that are difficult to fix later on down the road. Instead, push it into position if possible or ask for help from family members or friends nearby who aren’t busy with other tasks.

*Seal up your fireplace – Before you move a hearth, take the time to seal it shut so that no ashes or debris fall out while someone is carrying it across the room. You can use construction adhesive and silicone caulk to ensure a tight fit before lifting off the top of an empty fireplace and carefully sliding everything else inside so you don’t graze any walls as you’re moving it from one side of your home to another.
